Most non-technical people view databases as a great mystery.  Well the secret is a database is an electronic library of information customized so you can pull up just the information you want to use.  Imagine your favorite book in a database.  If you wanted to look up just your favorite chapter, you could do it using a search string or command like “mystery solved” or “page 210”.

The use for a database can be as simple as keeping track of books and CDs or as complex as managing your customer files in a small business.  Either way, the information can be retrieved without spending an hour digging through manual files and folders.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a crack tech wiz to use a small database.  Just start by building a simple Excel spreadsheet, then import the information into Access.  Access can create the database for you and walk you through creating input forms.  Viola!, you are a database user.

The start of the school year brings all types of supply lists to parents, but the latest twist is the new calculator race.  Every year newer more expensive models arrive and this year is no exception.

The TI-Nspire is a mathematics computer disguised as a calculator.  The top model features a touch screen and allows side by side comparisons of different ways of working out solutions.  Software is available to allow the transfer of information from the TI-Nspire to a home computer or laptop.

I don’t know if graphing calculators actually make children smarter, but I am all for anything that engages interest in performing well in math.

Don’t forget the apple, for the kid, not the teacher.

Techsnoop snoops out the latest on technology, new products, software and provide tips and advice on integrating technology in a useful way.

This blog will give you information on the tools you use everyday to make them less frustrating and more efficient.  After all, why pay hundreds of dollars for the latest gadget and only use two features?

Time is a valuable asset and your tools should provide you with more of it to spend enjoying life and your family, not force you to spend hours on hold for tech support.  So let’s have fun!

The iPad, HTC Evo and Samsung Epic are moving technology quickly into the futuristic realm we used to see only in movies.  The portable all in one computing device is both accessible and affordable now, so do we really need all this power at our fingertips?

Well, it depends on what your business and hobby needs are.  For instance, if you are hooked to specific TV shows but find yourself always away from home, the Epic is a great alternative to DVR.  If you are a reading buff (me), the iPad and Evo both have text reader features and large screens.

But if you need near full computing power in a small device, choose the iPad.

Whichever you choose, you will multi-task like never before.  BUT, build in a second battery in the price of the Evo or Epic.  These are serious power eaters.  So is the iPad, but Apple does not allow user level access to their batteries.

With so many great choices, I may have to buy more than one!
